Claude is Anthropic's family of language models, reachable through claude.ai, the Claude API, Claude Code and the desktop and mobile apps. Most reports of “Claude is down” are really about one of those surfaces: the API can be serving traffic normally while claude.ai will not load, and vice versa.
Anthropic runs a status page that separates the consumer apps from the API, and often breaks the API down further by model family. Elevated error rates and capacity constraints are usually posted as degraded performance rather than an outage, which is honest but easy to misread — a degraded Claude is frequently one returning 429s or overloaded errors on a large share of requests.

A 429 or `overloaded_error` on your own key is rate limiting or capacity pressure on your account tier, not a platform outage, and it will not appear on the status page. Check your usage limits first. If the web app hangs but the API answers, clear site data or try a different browser — a stale session is a common cause. Long conversations hitting the context limit fail in a way that also looks like an outage.
