In 2026 Razorpay piloted UPI checkout inside Claude with NPCI, launched an Agent Studio built on Anthropic's Claude Agent SDK, and shipped 100+ updates at Sprint 2026. What was announced, and what it means for a checkout's failure modes.
Razorpay's big theme for 2026 is agentic payments: purchases that an AI agent completes on your behalf inside a conversation, with no checkout page in between. The company has turned that into a pilot, a product line and the headline of its annual launch event. Here is what it actually announced, in order.
On 23 February 2026, Razorpay and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) announced a pilot of agentic payments running inside Claude. A user asks Claude to order food or groceries. Claude works out what they want, shows the options, and completes the purchase in the same conversation. The launch merchants were Zomato, Swiggy and Zepto.
This works because of UPI Reserve Pay. The user authorises a single spending limit per merchant once, and later transactions under that limit do not need a PIN each time. The user can see transactions in real time, change the limit, or revoke consent whenever they want.
This came after a similar Razorpay–NPCI pilot with OpenAI, announced at Global Fintech Fest 2025. It is still a limited pilot with no public date for a wider rollout.
On 12 March 2026, at its FTX'26 event, Razorpay launched Agent Studio. It is a marketplace and builder for payment and business-banking agents, built on Anthropic's Claude Agent SDK. The first agents are:
Alongside it came an Agentic Experience Platform with three parts. Onboarding goes through an agent, and Razorpay says this cuts signup from 30–45 minutes to about five. The dashboard answers questions in plain language. Integration can be done "in under 10 minutes" from Claude Code, Replit or Emergent.
Sprint is Razorpay's annual product release, and the 2026 edition packed more than 100 launches into six areas. The agentic ones got top billing, but the list also includes a lot of plain payment infrastructure:
| Area | Selected launches |
|---|---|
| Agentic stack | Agentic payments in chat and voice, Agent Studio, an n8n node, a Replit integration, the Razorpay MCP server |
| International | Localised checkout, Apple Pay and Google Pay, new global accounts (UAE, Australia, Switzerland, Canada), intelligent routing |
| Payment gateway | Biometric card authentication, UPI Reserve Pay, an intelligent retry engine, ₹1 registrations for UPI Autopay, support for 8- and 9-digit card BINs |
| D2C | Quick Buy 2.0, Login with Razorpay, "self-healing" POS, POS Command Centre |
| Business banking | Agentic business banking, Payroll Engine 2.0, corporate cards, DirectToPhone payouts |
The 8- and 9-digit BIN support is the kind of change that only gets noticed when it is missing. Card networks are moving to longer BINs, and a gateway that parses the old length misroutes or rejects cards it should accept.
For anyone who has to answer "why did this payment fail?", agentic payments add links to a chain that was already long. A normal Razorpay payment depends on the merchant, Razorpay, the customer's bank or UPI app, and NPCI. An agent-initiated payment adds:
That makes checking one status page less useful than checking the whole chain. isuptime reads Razorpay's status on the same schedule as Claude, OpenAI and the rest of the 102 services it monitors. When a payment fails inside an assistant, you can see which link reported a problem at that moment. For what Razorpay shipped more recently, see what is new at Razorpay in August and September.
