Tailscale builds a private WireGuard network between your machines, using a hosted coordination server to distribute keys and routes. The traffic itself is peer-to-peer, which is the crucial fact about its outages: the control plane going down does not tear down existing connections.
The status page covers the coordination server, the admin console, the login servers and the DERP relays. Read them separately. A coordination outage stops new devices joining and stops route changes taking effect, while established tunnels keep passing traffic. DERP relay problems affect only the connections that could not establish a direct path.

Key expiry is the most common cause of a device dropping off with nothing wrong at Tailscale — node keys expire on a schedule unless disabled. ACL changes take effect immediately and lock out access in a way that reads as an outage. If a connection works but is slow, it is probably relaying through DERP rather than going direct, which is a NAT problem on your network.
