Is PSN down? How to check PlayStation Network status properly

4 min read

PlayStation Network is five services in about 60 countries, and Sony posts problems per service and per country. How to read Sony's status page, the problems that look like a PSN outage but aren't, and what still works on a PS5 when PSN is genuinely down.

The fastest answer is PlayStation Network's live status on isuptime. It reads Sony's own status feeds every few minutes and tells you whether anything is posted against PSN right now.

The more useful answer is that "PSN is down" is rarely true of all of PSN. Sony reports problems service by service and country by country, and most problems touch one service in a handful of countries. If you can't sign in but your friend in another country can, you may both be right.

PSN is five services, not one

Sony's status page splits PlayStation Network into five services. Each can fail on its own:

Service What it covers What breaks when it fails
Account management Sign in, create account, edit account details You can't sign in, or you're signed out mid-session
Gaming and social Online play, trophies, challenges, game help, tournaments, game streaming Matchmaking fails, party chat drops, trophies don't sync
PlayStation Store Browse, search, purchase, download, redeem voucher Purchases fail, downloads stall, codes won't redeem
PlayStation Video Sony's video service Video purchases and playback
PlayStation Direct Sony's online hardware shop Can't buy consoles or accessories directly from Sony

So the first question to answer is not "is PSN down" but "which of these is failing for me". A store that won't download and an online match that won't connect are usually two different problems.

Sony publishes PSN status by region and country

Sony doesn't publish one global PSN status. It publishes a separate feed for each sales region, and inside each one, a status for every country:

A problem can be posted against a single service in a single country, against a whole country, or against a whole region. That matters when you read the page. One country's store being down isn't PSN being down, and planned maintenance in one region isn't an outage at all.

isuptime reads both the European and American feeds and reports the worse of the two. A problem posted in one or two countries shows as degraded. It only shows as an outage when a large part of the network is affected. Planned maintenance is counted separately and doesn't turn the dot red.

How to check, in order

  1. Check PSN's status on isuptime or Sony's own page at status.playstation.com. If something is posted, it names the service and the countries.
  2. Make sure you're looking at your own country. Sony's page opens for one locale. A problem listed for another country won't affect you, and a problem in yours won't show if you're looking at the wrong one.
  3. Check the service, not just the headline. If the store is listed but gaming and social isn't, online play should still work.
  4. Check the game's own servers. Most online games run their own servers. If a game can't connect but your PSN sign-in, friends list and store all work, the problem is almost certainly the game, not PSN. Check the publisher's status page or social accounts.
  5. Run the PS5's own connection test: Settings → Network → Connection Status → Test Internet Connection. If it fails at "Obtain IP address" or "Internet connection", the problem is between your console and the internet, not at Sony.

Problems that look like PSN outages but aren't

What still works on a PS5 when PSN is down

Even in a real outage, a PS5 is far from useless:

Should you wait or do something?

If Sony has posted a problem for your country and service, there's nothing you can fix. Wait, and check back on the PSN status page. If nothing is posted and the PS5 connection test fails, the problem is on your side: restart the router, then the console. If nothing is posted and only one game fails, check that game's servers.

isuptime checks PlayStation Network alongside 102 other services. If party chat fails, check Discord's status too; if a stream won't start, check Twitch. That way you can see quickly whether a problem is Sony's alone.
